Women in medicine aren’t afraid to have difficult conversations.
Following the tremendous success of our Sydney event, the Network of Women in Emergency Medicine (NoWEM) is delighted to be collaborating with Women in Intensive Care Network (WIN) to present a follow-up.
Join Dr Natalie Thurtle live in Melbourne as we broadcast her keynote address, cancelled last year in controversial circumstances, on her time as MSF medical coordinator in Palestine. A panel of experts will then lead a discussion on the challenges faced by healthcare workers and humanitarian organisations around the provision of healthcare in conflict zones. What are legal rights and indeed our duties when it comes to human rights advocacy? How can we make our voices heard, without being cancelled or doing further harm? In a tense socio-political climate, where for many people the current Israel/Palestine conflict is deeply personal, how can we overcome barriers to continued discussion and connection?
The event is a sequel, not a replica - we are hoping to take the dialogue further. Those who attended the Sydney event are thus warmly invited to join us again. Hard conversations can be uncomfortable, but if anyone has the skills and pelvic floor to thoughtfully go there, it’s women in critical care.
Our incredible panel (an unapologetic wanel!):
Moderated by Dr Ruth Mitchell, neurosurgeon and Nobel Peace Prize laureate
Dr Natalie Thurtle, former medical coordinator for MSF in Palestine
Mary Freer, CEO Compassion Revolution
Dr Sarah Abdo, physician and activist
Dr Kristin Boyle, emergency physician
Rita Jabri Markwell, human rights and discrimination lawyer
